I started and stopped probably 20 novels that were going to be my magnum opus. Two years ago I did Nano, and won with 50,000 totally unusable words, but I finished it. A while later, I was able to finish and okay short story. Since then, I’ve written two more (unusable but getting better) novels and a bunch if short stories with increasing degrees of okayness. Also a couple that are pretty good.<br />It’s also helpful to realize that you won’t have That One Book. You’ll write down your great idea, and then you’ll move on to the next great idea. Elizabeth Gilbert says when you respect someone too much, the sex is no good, and the same goes for writing.
