Just a quickie today. (Wednesday night is my kryptonite and this week is already shaping up to be another doozy.)
If you've been following the blog pretty closely, you might remember that a journalist called me about the posts I write on M.F.A. programs. We talked on the phone for about a half an hour, and I wrote a post responding to some of the "Not ALL MFAs" feedback I've gotten.
Well the article she was working on is finally done. It's quite good:
Why Writers Love to Hate the M.F.A.
My thirty minute phone call is relegated to a single paragraph towards the end, but that's how these things go. I think the journalist was a little disappointed to find out that I don't hold an MFA (rather I hold a creative writing undergraduate degree), and that much of my insight comes from reading what they've written or talking to them rather than first hand experience.
Still, that article is in the New York Times--thefreakingNewYortTimesOMGsqueee--and the article includes a link to my work, so a lot of people are stopping by and a few are voting on our best heroine poll. I was going to close that poll today and move on to the second semifinal, but now I think I'll leave it up for a couple more days.

Congratulations! The nytimes really does reach a lot of people. I'm from Brazil and I should be working on some lame task the my low level job requires, instead I'm procrastinating, reading your blog because of the article. How crazy is that?!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! Congratulations - it is well deserved. :-)
ReplyDeleteJust read about you in NYT. Food for thought,as it were.
ReplyDeleteYou're contemplating pursuing one? Was that news to you?
ReplyDeleteYeah, truncating a half hour conversation into a single paragraph leaves some nuance at the door. What I really said was that I did my research into MFAs back when I was wrapping up my undergrad, and I probably read a few hundred articles and blogs about it. I told her that there were days I sometimes consider that maybe one of those dual program MAs might be for me, but that mostly at this point, I really just need to write more.
